Gastroenterologists meet in the heart of the Pyrenees

As the apricots and peaches around Perpignan were ripening and Catalans were celebrating the Feast of Sant Joan, 150 Czech and Slovak gastroenterologists set out for Andorra to join approximately 50 specialists from Catalan-speaking regions in attending an event with the official title, “1st Meeting of Gastroenterologists from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Catalan-Speaking Regions” (22 – 23 June 1995). The meeting was sponsored by the pharmaceutical company PRO.MED.CS Praha a.s., whose product range includes drugs acting on the GIT.

The meeting took place in a modern conference and exhibition centre in the Andorran capital of Andorra la Vella. This should mark the start of a new tradition that the company wants to establish and foster. Scientific endorsement was provided by members of the Scientific Council: Associate Professor Jan Kotrlík, M.D., CSc., chairman of the Czech Gastroeneterological Society, and his Catalan colleagues – Dr MA Gassul from Badalona and Dr JR Armengol Miró from Barcelona. The Honorary Committee was chaired by Prime Minister of Andorra Marc Forné Molné with Jordi Pujol i Soley, President of the Government of Catalonia.

The topics of individual lecture blocks practically covered the entire spectrum of GIT issues, including minimally invasive surgical procedures and imaging methods. The meeting also included a poster section.

In his lecture, Associate Professor Kotrlík focused on the diagnosis of bulbitis. Dr Petr and Dr Shonová provided an overview of developing theories on the infectious origin of gastric and duodenal ulcers. In a report on the diagnosis and classification of stomach polyps, Dr Krtek emphasised the importance of performing a detailed histological examination and presented his own experience from long-term monitoring of 500 post-endoscopic polypectomy patients. Professor Špičák spoke on the past and present of oesophageal varices, and Dr Gryga offered an overview of the histology of fundoplication (treatment of hiatal hernias) accompanied by examples from his own experience. Dr Hyrdel presented a report on the diagnosis and treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome at the National Centre for Resistant Peptic Ulcers in Slovakia, where the examination of rising serum gastrin against baseline values while monitoring the gastric acid secretion response is considered the most important diagnostic algorithm. The clinical manifestations, complications, diagnosis and treatment of reflux disease were discussed in Dr Hildebrandt’s talk. Dr Kaščák presented nearly twenty years of experience with the endoscopic extraction of foreign bodies from the upper GIT. Dr Zaoral’s lecture on endoscopic ultrasonography provided basic information about this method for the preoperative determination of the extent of tumour infiltration of the oesophagus wall. In the poster section there was much interest in Professor Květina’s presentation of an original preclinical method aimed at understanding the individual processes contributing to the fate of xenobiotics (including drugs) in the intestinal wall.
